Bioelectricity

Since 2004 PSR has been actively involved in shaping Brazil’s Bioelectricity Program, in cooperation with the sugarcane producers association (UNICA) and the São Paulo co-generation association (Cogen-SP). The Bioelectricity Program has developed a business model for the integrated production of ethanol, sugar, electric energy and carbon credits. Within this program PSR has advised more than twenty major sugarcane producers such as Cosan, ETH, Bunge and Brenco, and energy producers such as Petrobras Distribuidora, on the development of business plans for biomass cogeneration. Long-term supply contracts for hundreds of MWs with distribution utilities, sold by sugarcane producers to distribution utilities in energy auctions, have been an important result of this program. PSR has also been advising “conventional” energy producers such as Alcoa, Petrobras Distribuidora, Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), Electricité de France (EdF), Montana Power (MDU) and Energias do Brasil (EDB), and international investment funds and multilateral institutions on bioenergy investments.
